The Dream SMP (Survival Multiplayer) is a Minecraft server created by the creator Dream where he invited many of his friends like Sapnap, Tommyinnit, GeorgeNotFound and Wilbur Soot to the server to play and create whatever they wanted in Minecraft.
This server began very similar to previous SMP’s like SMP Live, but it grew into something a lot more, becoming the most popular Minecraft SMP today and possibly ever. With most SMP’s having started with just some friends messing around, building, and chatting Dream SMP grew into a long, constantly developing story with almost every stream from each creator impacting how and what happened in the lore as the creators and viewers would come to call it. With pretty much all Dream SMP-related content always being streamed on primarily twitch, with the exception of the YouTuber Technoblade who streams on YouTube, it allowed hours upon hours of content to be consumed for viewers' stories to be created through them.
What made it work so well for me was that it was the sense of simple regular normal interactions between the creators like Tommyinnit and Tubbo and their random shenanigans which drove the story forward. Yes, some parts were scripted, but the majority of what happened on stream was I believe unplanned up until some of the newest streams. One stream I absolutely loved was when jschlatt was voted in as president of L’manberg because it was decided by us, the viewers. That interaction between us and the actual story is something that I personally absolutely loved because I felt more attached to the characters that my favorite creators were portraying.
All this being said, Dream SMP hasn’t been quite what it was before, it has become more and more inactive with fewer and fewer streams being streamed with the main contributors Tommyinnit, Wilbur Soot, Quality and Technoblade not having streamed on Dream SMP for months. Also, the Dream SMP has become more and more story-driven rather than driven by the shenanigans that the streamers make up which for me has become less enticing to watch and frankly I’ve simply stopped watching the Dream SMP streams.
